Constructed in June 2017, the WA Hotel, a luxury five-star hotel, was adapted to pay tribute to the ,”Art Deco,” time-period of Southern California’s Golden Age. Through the bronze ornamentation and handmade stone details, the architectural and interior design truly gauge the Hollywood Glamour age that Southern California is known for.
Today, Southern California is known as the, “Land of Opportunity.” It is a hub for creative based dreams to come alive. Everywhere one goes, creativity flows throughout the environment, and gives SoCal an established identity. After initial brand research of the existing hotel, most of the clientele that WA hosts, comes of the young creative individual that lives within the Southern California region.
Art deco can be defined as, “Art Deco celebrated the modern world + industry and developed from what people saw as the promise of machine age.” Upon interpretation, I believe that the hotel was originally designed to mimic the art-deco details established within the 1920’s time era.
The definition, however, states that it is to be designed to be according to the modern world. Therefore, I believe that the hotel should be designed to modernize the idea of, “Art-Deco,” by taking advantage of the hand-made and attention to detail, which can be related to the traditional art movement.
The main aspect of a hotel relies on the unique experience that the occupant obtains. The concept that is provided within Technical Report 4A, was inspired by the young creative driven individual trying to find inspiration at every corner. Through the idea of, “hand-made detail,” the integrated architectural details + materiality with lighting will create a modern interpretation of the Golden Age of Southern California. Lighting creates a unique experience that the Southern California building region has never seen before.
MECHANICAL BREADTH
I plan to study the power consumption as a whole building solution, and see where changes can be made, in order to lessen the energy consumption of the building (which is a main goal for the overall Southern California region).
Like stated before, the main source of energy usage comes mainly from the guestrooms. In order to mitigate this usage by a relatively large amount, I wish to replace the existing lighting control system from a tied in Crestron system, to a Lutron myRoom Plus guestroom solution. In short, the Lutron myRoom system will allow HVAC power loads to be integrated into the lighting control system, and be set into a Building Management System to program.
The idea is the focus in on the use of materiality, and Architectural elements to evoke experience within hotel guests. Therefore, a study of all the interior features within the spaces will need to be further analyzed and studied further within a lighting perspective to capture this atmosphere. This will include the interior details that are utilized within these architectural features, and how lighting is integrated into them, or how natural daylighting affects the layouts within interior spaces (e.g. the restaurant program layout).
With the addition of added equipment that was further mentioned within both the electrical + mechanical portions of the entire building study, rooms will be further modified to conceal power equipment, to enhance experience of the occupants, but also give ease of building maintenance to staff.
